Principle 1: The Ten Commandments

Principle 1 is about as simple, yet, as profound as it gets. Principle 1 is the Ten Commandments.

  1. (Exodus 20:3) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
  2. (Exodus 20:4-6) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
  3. (Exodus 20:7) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
  4. (Exodus 20:8-11) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
  5. (Exodus 20:12) Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
  6. (Exodus 20:13) Thou shalt not kill.
  7. (Exodus 20:14) Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  8. (Exodus 20:15) Thou shalt not steal.
  9. (Exodus 20:16) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
  10. (Exodus 20:17) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. (1 John 3:4)

The cross of Calvary testifies to the immutability of the law of God. That law is a transcript of God's character, the standard of character for all human intelligences. It could not be changed, not one precept of it could be altered, to meet man in his fallen condition. But our God, having committed Himself to the amazing work of our redemption, in giving His only begotten Son resolved that He would spare nothing, however costly, that was essential in saving the soul of the sinner. All the resources of heaven were given to accomplish this great work. He would not have it said by worlds unfallen, by the universe of heaven, by Satan's kingdom, by an apostate world, that His gift could have a rival, or in any way have been greater. (Bible Echo, June 17, 1895 par. 3, Ellen G. White)

The Ten Commandments are a transcript of God's character, and He desires nothing more than for us to form a character like His. That is why we need to study and meditate regularly upon the Ten Commandments. To know God in a personal relationship is so important to Him, He has make the Ten Commandments one of the two pillars of the New Covenant.

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. (Hebrews 8:10-12) (See also Jeremiah 31:31-34)

Every one of the Devil's false doctrines are designed to lead us into breaking at least one of the Ten Commandments—which is sin. Every false doctrine that is believed, causes us to separate from our Creator.

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2)

For us to dwell in eternity, we will have to attain a character like our Creator's before we leave this earth. To do this, we will have to regularly examine our character in the mirror called the Ten Commandments. This is the reason why the Ten Commandments are so vitally important, and this is the reason why everyone of the Devil's false doctrines are deadly. They are all designed to lead us into breaking at least one of the Ten Commandments.

Any doctrine that causes us to violate just one of the Ten Commandments needs to be rejected outright.
